Blizzard Set to Make Diablo Announcement at GamesCom

Are you attending GamesCom this year? If so, mark August 21 on your calendar as a more than likely can’t miss special announcement the Diablo team will be making there.

The message sent out to media said the following:

We’re making a special announcement that’s sure to capture the attention of the Heavens, Burning Hells, and all the shadowed places that lie between.

The event will take place August 21 at 11:30 AM local time.

Now first off, I know a lot of people are going to start going off on how this is probably console related – however, I seriously doubt that. We know that the Diablo team has been working on what they call loot 2.0 – we also know they’re working on the expansion (which Mike Morhaime has stated in past quarterly investor conference calls). Neither of which is scheduled to release until after BlizzCon in November. We also know that the devs have said they are not working on Patch 1.0.9.

Also, we learned today that Nick Carpenter, VP of Cinematics at Blizzard, has stated they just finished another cinematic and they can’t wait to show it off to the world.

So what does this tell us? That I’m sure something pretty big will be announced. The Diablo team has been pretty quiet on talking about their new changes to the game – much to the chagrin of the community. I think GamesCom is going to be ONE of the major announcements the community is looking for. Will it be the next expansion? Possible. They did reveal Diablo 3 in Europe back in 2008. Many people will claim this announcement will only come at BlizzCon – Blizzard’s own event – but Blizzard has shown they are willing to make new game announcements at other events like they did with Hearthstone at PAX East.

Another possibility though is showing off a major patch that will change the course of the game. Think of it as almost an expansion without having to buy it. It will include the itemization work, pvp, and new end game modes. It might as well be an expansion but it will give Blizzard time to tide over the community when the expansion actually does get announced at BlizzCon.

My best guess is we’ll hear about this major patch at GamesCom and it will get released shortly after BlizzCon. We’ll then get the expansion reveal at BlizzCon with them probably having a release date in mid to late 2014.

I guess we’ll just have to see.

It could very well be the announcement for the expansion. They’ve got so much packed into Blizzcon, they may need to make some announcements early. Otherwise there opening ceremony is going to be 4 hours long with: Hearthstone! Wow Expansion, D3 Expansion, Legacy of the Void, Consoles!

Could be, but unless the expansion is scheduled to release in December/January I’m thinking it’s going to be something else to get Diablo players excited again 🙂
