Our friends over at MMO Champion unveiled this morning a new trademark that Blizzard just registered titled “The Dark Below”. This was listed under computer games so it’s certainly something that is related to an upcoming game.

There is a lot of speculation that Blizzard will be revealing the Diablo 3 expansion next week at GamesCom and this could potentially be the name of that expansion. However, this could also be World of Warcraft related as well.

We have a good idea that the next WoW expansion will deal with the Burning Legion, and for anyone who ever had the old World of Warcraft RPG books (that aren’t canon) would recognize the name of “The Dark Below”. According to WoWPedia “The Dark Below is a place inhabited by demons, devils and infernal creatures, from where some sorcerers take their power directly and sometimes have a patron beast to foster their magic.^“

I think the WoW expansion name is probably a stretch and it’s more likely dealing with Diablo 3. However, remember back when Blizzard registered Project Blackstone and people went nuts that it would be the Diablo expansion name? Well, that turned out to be a transmedia effort for StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm. Actually Project Blackstone was just a domain name registration and not a trademark. (Thanks Danny Perschonok)

As always, everything is currently just flat out speculation and we’ll find out the details when we find out. With that said, what do you think it is?
